English: White-winged
Lark
Russian: Белокрылый жаворонок
Mongolian:
Цагаалиг болжмор
German: Weissflugellerche
French: Alouette leocoptere
Japanese: ハジロコウテンシ (Hajiro-kotenshi)
Body length: 17-19
cm.
Breeds on natural steppe, dry heaths and to some degree on cultivations. Partly
migratory.
Identification: Characteristic
wing pattern of white, black and brown (sexes largely alike). Wide white
trailing edge of wing makes wings look peculiarly narrow against a light sky.
Most similar to Mongolian Lark (M.mongolica; not treated), but that is larger,
has heavier bill, and has a Calandra-like black patch on the breast side.
- Adult
♂: Crown unstreaked red-brown. Breast usually sparsely streaked only.
- Adult ♀:
Crown streaked, grey-brown with only tinge of rufous. Breast generally
prominently streaked.
