Breeds in shady woodland with dense under-storey, in parks and gardens with
rank undergrowth. In Britain & Ireland common in deciduous and mixed
wood-land. A common bird over large parts of C and S Europe. Migratory in N and
E, short-distance migrant or resident in W and S. Nests low down in bush.
Identification: Rather
stocky build, roughly as Garden Warbler. Dirty grey above and light olive-grey
below, ♂ has small
black cap (reaches only to upper part of eye; cf. the small-bodied and
big-headed tits,p. 334, which have larger black cap as well as a black bib), ♀ and juvenile with red-brown cap. 1st-winter
♂ has cap
brown, black or a mixture of both colors. Tail invariably lacks white. Bill and
legs grey.
