Site
description: The site covers
lakes that surround Chandmani hill, located in Zavkahn River basin of Jargalant
soum’s east side, marshy ground and 6-12km wide wetland that comprises 4-5 deltas
of Zavkhan River. The largest lake of this area is Ereen Lake, which is an important
area for Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus), where stopover during their migration. Meadows and wetlands of
the site are the most favorable places for water and marsh birds to breed and
stopover during migration. There is tourist camp under construction close to
Ereen Lake and it may cause disturbance to birds if its location too close to
the lake.
Importance for
birds: The site
supports globally threatened bird species such as Dalmatian
Pelican (Pelecanus crispus) and Swan
Goose (Anser cygnoides). Migratory
bird species including Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus),
Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Bar-headed Goose (Anser
indicus) and Ruddy Shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea) occur, exceeding 1% of their flyway
populations.
