Status: Very rare species. According to the IUCN Red List categories and criteria, the species evaluated as-Endangered.

Distribution and Range: Breeds on Alakoli Lake in Kazakhstan and Tari Lake in Russia. Winters in Hebei, China. In Mongolia: breeds on Mongolia’s big lakes with reedssuch as Airag, Khyrgas, Khar Us Lake, Dorgon, Taatsyn Tsagaan, Adgiin Tsagaan, Orog, Boon Tsagaan Lakes, in the Great Lake Depression, central region Lakes, such as, Erkhel, Sangiin Dalai, Ogii, Terkhiin Tsagaan, big and small lakes near Ulz, Kherlen River basin, i.e., Galuut, Khokh, Tooroi, Khaichiin Tsagaan, Sumiin Tsagaan, Chukh and Buir Lake, Khalkh Nomrog River basin lakes, i.e., Buir, Orog, Dornodyn Khokh and Munkh Khairkhany Khukh Lakes.


Habitat: Nets in colonies on flat open islands on the fresh water and saline lakes, with reed and tall sledges.

Population and Threats: Clobal population is estimated at around 10,000 birds. There are 300-1000 around Tari Lake, approximately 1,000 around the Alakoli Lake. About 30 were recorded on the Buir, Khukh, Orog, Taatsiin Tsagaan and Bust Lakes and Ulz River. Eggs and chicks are preyed upon by other gulls and during storms waves crash over the island destroying the nest and eggs; chicks perish from hypothermia during heavy and prolonged rains.

Conservation measures: Included as very rare animal in the Mongolian law on Fauna, include in the CITES, Annex I, and CMS, Annex I, the Mongolian Red Book (1987, 1997). Distribution area is included within the Mongol Daguur, Nomrog Strictly Protected Areas.

Further Actions: Assess its distribution, population abundance, restrict breeding habitat for livestock pastures, provide and support undisturbed breeding conditions, improve the conservation management in the NSPAN.

ITINERARY
Day 1
Arrive to Mongolia. (International flights arrives to Mongolia mostly early in the morning or afternoon past 17:00 clock.) If you arrive in morning flight we will add near city observation program. Stay at hotel near airport.
Day 2

In the morning, we will do observation around Ulaanbaatar city. After lunch, we will depart to Choibalsan city, the center of eastern region of Mongolia, and arrive around 18:00 clock. Stay night at hotel. (30 km)


Day 3

Early in the morning, we will drive to Bayan lake, passing by famous Menengiin tal and Baga khuree border line. Before the lunch we will do observation around Bayan lake and have open-air meal for lunch. Then we will drive to Buir lake, located on the border of Mongolia and China, which 90% is on Mongolian territory.  There are several associated small lakes at its east. The reeds along shoreline of Buir lake provide good nesting habitats for birds. Overnight stay in tourist camp. (290 км)

Day 4

On this day after bird watching in Altan river, we will arrive to the center of Khalkgol soum. Visit to Yalalt museum and Yalalt monument about Mongolia-Japan battle. In the afternoon, we will reach to Tashgain 5 lake to camp and do observation. We will arrive at Bayan lake, passing by Baga khuree borderline and do observation from 3 spots. Overnight stay in tent. (150 km)

Day 5

On the way back to Ulaanbaatar, we will arrive to Choibalsan city and stay in tourist camp at Kherlen river side. Bird watching around camp. (320 km)


Day 6

Drive to Toson Khulstai specially protected area and do observation around Gun Tsengeleg lake. In the afternoon, we will arrive at Chinggis city and stay night at hotel. (330 km)

Day 7

Drive to Gun galuutai specially protected area and stay at tourist camp. This site with beautiful landscape compromises small lakes, Kherlen river and steppe is the heaven to birds where we can see wetland birds.Overnight stay in tourist camp. (210 км)

Day 8

Back to Ulaanbaatar city and do shopping in Gobi cashmere factory store and souvenir shop at State Department Store. Bird watching around Zaisangiin am and Songino and stay in tourist camp near airport. (170 km)
